In Russia we have hot summer in my city too. Therefore this article about sunbeam protection was very interesting and kinda useful. But I'm not totally sure about tatami. Did you use it only during the summer?

else of tatami, the bamboo materials are also highly demand in japan, their eating utilities, kitchen utilities, home decor , lighting, garden furniture etc. there is a japan local retail china store called natural kitchen, who offer 99% are the bamboo and wood made kitchen utilities, and it keep of growing in japan annually even the economy in japan is slow currently!
I love tatami, its so soft to walk on and make the room so beautiful. I am sorry I dont have a tatami in Norway...but my brother in law have a japanese room with tatami which I enjoy sitting in.
